Why This Washcloth Is the Perfect First Crochet Project.

If you’re just starting your crochet journey, this washcloth is the ideal place to begin. It uses only one stitch, the single crochet which is the most basic and beginner-friendly stitch out there. No fancy techniques, no complicated patterns just a simple rhythm of looping yarn that builds your confidence with every row.

Even better? Washcloths are forgiving. If your tension is a little off or your edges aren’t perfectly straight, it still works beautifully. In fact, my first washcloth looked more like a lopsided rectangle than a square, but it’s still one of my favorites. This project lets you practice the essentials while creating something useful and satisfying. Plus, with a cozy cotton yarn, you’ll end up with a soft, scrubby texture that’s perfect for bath time or dishes.

Skill Level: Beginner

Stitch Used: Single Crochet (sc)

Finished Size: Approx. 7" x 7" (but customizable)

Materials Needed:

  • Yarn: Worsted weight cotton yarn (e.g., Lily Sugar’n Cream)

  • Hook: Size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook

  • Extras: Tapestry needle, scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Start with a Foundation Chain. Chain 19 stitches. This will be the width of your washcloth.
  2. Row 1

Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.

    Make a single crochet (sc).

Continue making one sc in each chain across the row.

At the end of the row, chain 1 and turn your work.

  3. Rows 2 and Beyond

Single crochet in each stitch across.

Chain 1 and turn at the end of each row.

Repeat until the piece is square or your desired length

 4. Finishing

Cut the yarn, leaving a 6" tail.

Pull the tail through the last loop to secure.

Use your tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Tips for Beginners:

  • Don’t worry if your edges aren’t perfect washcloths are forgiving!
  • Cotton yarn is best for absorbency and durability.
  • Practice makes progress: your second one will be even better.

Crocheting your first washcloth is more than just learning a stitch, it’s about discovering what your hands can do when you give them time and patience. This simple project is proof that you don’t need fancy tools or years of experience to create something useful and beautiful.

So, if you’ve been waiting for the “right” moment to start crocheting, this is it. Grab your yarn, pick up your hook, and let yourself enjoy the process. You might just surprise yourself with what you create.
